Snake Bite Crisis

Approximately 5 million snake bites occur each year in India, resulting in up to 2.7 million envenomation's, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Each year, between 81,000 and 138,000 people die, according to published reports.

Other Effects of Snakebites

There are approximately 400,000 amputations and other permanent disabilities caused by snakebite envenoming each year. In many cases, snakebites go unreported because victims seek treatment from non-medical sources or do not have access to medical care. This results in many snakebite cases going unreported.

Anti Snake Venoms (ASV)

Most of the harmful effects of snakebite envenoming can be prevented or reversed by snake antivenoms. Anti Snake Venoms (ASV) should be a part of any primary health care package.

Indian Scenario

WHO added snakebite envenoming to its priority list of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in June 2017. A nationally representative study (Million Death study) noted--56,000* annual snakebite deaths nationally. In India, around 90% of snake bites are caused by the 'big four' among the crawlers - common krait, Indian cobra, Russell's viper and saw scaled viper.

Action Plan

1. Awareness and Outreach

Mission will focus on reaching out to the mass population through awareness sessions in schools, colleges, communities, etc. Mission aims to reach every village and make people aware about the snakes and snake bite management.

2. Capacity Building

Training of health providers for managing snakebite cases. Training of trainers who will educate people about snakes and snake bites. Training of Snake rescuers.

3. Educational material in regional languages

Designing and publishing the education material related to snakes and snake bite. Ex. Pocket Guide, Prevention & First Aid Poster, etc.

4. Providing ASV kits in rural areas

Availability of ASV is very crucial in snake bite management. But in many remote areas of rural India it’s hard to get ASV in primary health centers.

5. Online platform for snakebite and ASV

An app for keeping the data about the ASV availability and the helpline for the snakebite emergency. Also, this app will provide a platform to rescuers to keep the records of snake rescues.

How can YOU contribute?

How would you respond if you found a snake in your balcony, society or company premises? You'll be terrified, right? That's because you might not know if that snake is venomous or non-venomous. Not only that, but we have seen people kill this so-called "predator" out of fear and ignorance. Do they deserve this? Reptiles are more terrified than humans at those moments, including snakes. Whenever a situation such as this arises, you should always contact an expert or a rescue team, they will take care of the situation by safely evacuating the space and rescuing the snake. The snake will then be examined for any injuries and treated as necessary. Finally it will be released into it's natural habitat. Now that's how you can take care of the situation, by contacting us!
