Common Name: Himalayan serow

Local Name: Sarao (Hindi), Saza (Mizo)

Scientific Name: Capricornis sumatraensis thar Hodgson

Description: The animal has a large head, donkey-like ears, thick neck, and short limbs. The horns are conical and black. The coat is coarse and its color varies from blackish to brownish-black. Himalayan serow is mainly a hill forest-dwelling species and is found at an elevation of 500-4000m.

Distribution: The animal is distributed from Jammu and Kashmir to the Mishmi Hills of Arunachal Pradesh. It is also found in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Darjeeling District of West Bengal.

Threats: The population of Himalayan serow is highly threatened due to habitat fragmentation, loss of habitat, illegal poaching, human-animal conflict, interspecific competition, etc.
