Scientific Name: Azadirachta indica A. Juss.
Description: An evergreen tree native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian subcontinent. The tree has wide and spreading branches and a fairly dense roundish crown that reaches a diameter of 20-25m.
Economic Importance: The Neem Tree is considered sacred by the Hindus. Also called ‘margosa oil,’ the oil extracted from the seeds heals bleeding gums, is a cure for pyorrhoea, used as an insecticide, and pesticide. The hard wood is used for making furniture and agricultural implements. Neem seed cake is used as a fertilizer and insect repellent. Young twigs are used as a toothstick while leaf paste is applied to the body to cure chicken pox.
